The Global Human Rights Commission (GHRC) expresses deep concern over the ongoing humanitarian and security crisis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). As reported by various international organizations, including the United Nations, Médecins Sans Frontières, and Human Rights Watch, the situation in the eastern provinces of the DRC continues to deteriorate due to the activities of armed groups, widespread human rights violations, and the displacement of millions of civilians.
Key Concerns:
Sexual and Gender-Based Violence: Women and children in displacement camps, particularly around Goma, are facing catastrophic levels of sexual violence. This violence, often perpetrated by armed groups, targets vulnerable individuals who are forced to venture into dangerous areas to gather essential supplies like food and firewood. Immediate protective measures are essential to safeguard these populations
Displacement and Humanitarian Crisis: Over 6 million people are currently displaced within the DRC, with many more fleeing to neighboring countries. The displacement crisis, compounded by food insecurity and disease outbreaks, requires a robust humanitarian response. International organizations are underfunded, and more support is urgently needed to address the escalating needs
MONUSCO Withdrawal and Security Vacuum: The withdrawal of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) from key provinces like North Kivu and Ituri is a critical moment. There is an urgent need for the Congolese government and international actors to ensure that this process does not lead to a security vacuum that could further exacerbate violence(
GHRC’s Proposed Actions:
Advocacy and Awareness: GHRC will launch an international advocacy campaign to bring attention to the humanitarian crisis in the DRC. We will work with global media, human rights organizations, and governments to raise awareness about the plight of displaced populations, particularly women and children, and call for immediate action to provide protection and resources.
Support for Legal and Policy Frameworks: GHRC urges the Congolese government and international bodies to strengthen legal frameworks to hold perpetrators accountable for human rights violations. This includes addressing sexual violence and ensuring that justice is served for the victims of these heinous acts.
Collaboration for Humanitarian Assistance: We will actively engage with UN agencies, international NGOs, and local partners to mobilize additional resources for the humanitarian response in the DRC. GHRC will advocate for increased funding to provide essential services such as healthcare, food, clean water, and shelter for displaced persons
Regional and Global Engagement: GHRC calls on regional powers and international stakeholders to support diplomatic efforts that prioritize a political solution to the ongoing conflict. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and offer support for regional peacebuilding initiatives, particularly those involving Angola, the African Union, and the Southern African Development Community (SADC)
Conclusion:
The crisis in the DRC demands immediate and coordinated international action. GHRC is committed to supporting efforts that address the root causes of the conflict while providing relief to those most affected. We will continue to advocate for the protection of human rights, the provision of humanitarian aid, and the establishment of long-term peace in the region.
